Many people don’t understand or even know what an SDS hammer drill actually is and why they are brilliant things to have! This page will hopefully explain the basics of why these drills are great to have around the house. They are far more powerful than a standard drill and make DIY jobs so much easier. They can used for anything from drilling a normal hole to chiseling tiles of the floor. Lets have a look at how they work.

What is an SDS  hammer drill?

SDS stands for Special Direct System and was first made available by Bosch in the mid 70′s. They are similar to everyday drills but have a much more powerful hammer system that is far more effective. More Hammer action is supplied to the drill bit which allows you to drill much harder substances like rock and concrete. They can also be used in conjunction with the correct bit for heavy duty work like chiseling tiles of the floor. SDS hammer drills are much safer to use than standard drills as there is less chance of slipping. The drill bits used have a special fitting which are designed for SDS drills only and they are much stronger and hardly every break or burn out.

How does an SDS hammer drill work?

The design of  SDS hammer drills allows the bit to move in the chuck. This is the major difference between these and standard drills. This allows more hammer action to pass through drill which makes drilling hard substances much easier. If you want to use the chiseling feature to strip tiles then you lock the rotating mechanism so that just the hammer action works. Please note that not all drills have the chiseling feature allowing hammer only, please read the specifications carefully.

Things to think about

When using drills this powerful be careful when drilling smaller holes in your home. If you have the drill set on a powerful mode you can end up chipping a large chunk out of the wall!
